Myself and three other guys started the pre-novitate in PortChester NY. Now during December we have been keep excellently busy. Not only do we have classes that we attend 4 week days, but we have about eight ministries. Starting with teaching Religious education, then going to tutoring and attendance at youth centers. Not only do we have various formative experiences, but we also have our main focus in play too. With human development we learn more ourself as persons and as men. It is a beautiful experience and focus, one that I am eternally grateful for and is an irreplaceable time.

On another note, as we are now during the season of advent we remember not only the birth of our lord and savior, but we also prepare and anticipate the new coming of Christ. Why is it that during this season people tend to be more joyous and kindly, is it due to the season, or is it because of tradition and family? That surely may be a part of it, but there is another part less spoken of, if spoken of at all. Yes you have the birth of Christ, which is one of, if not the single greatest thing that has happened to human kind. Yes we were created, and by right that should be the greatest, but by our sin we should have wiped out that good, but God has so loved us that he has come down as a child, our child, so as to save us. What more could we ask, but that the lord and Christ would free us from our sins? More than that, he promised that he would be with us forever, to strengthen us and guide us. Once it is all said and done, he would then come again, to bring all to himself, so as long as they accept him.

Now, as we are speaking of newness and heaven, what is it like? Well, in a way we do not know, nor can we fully as we are alive. "For no eye has seen nor ear heard what God has prepared for those who love him." The church states that we do not fully know what is in store for us in heaven. Yes that may be undefined, but where is the interest in a mystery that has already been solved. How would any good author expect their material to be read if they revealed all in their first page? So no, we do not fully know what is in store for us, but what we do know is that it is God's home. The very same God who fashioned the heavens and earth out of nothing, and the very same who breathed his spirit into clay, so as to make his image. We do not know, but I say, why do we need to? God promises himself, which is beyond all things. So be hopeful and expectant this advent season, for God has prepared for you the heavens, from the foundations of the world.Sciullohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12222038765677046031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1275860299110835527.post-16117065553323203552013-03-25T09:37:00.003-04:002013-03-25T09:37:47.891-04:00It is the Funny Things

I think all of us in Formation, regardless of the opinions, could agree on one thing. Formation changes you, it forces responsibility, or an accountability toward what is needed to be done. Either way, none of us could ever imagine the hilarious nature we would grow into. Here are several

Either way, I have learned that though the big things are what are needed to be done, it is the ordinary little things which form or attend to the result of the big things. As in you can run a youth center with nearly no flaws, having everyone behave, but in the end the kids feel a lacking. Or you can have the kids clean up before and after, and maybe have them help in an important job. The difference, though small, has an impact which can affect the young person for the rest of their life. It changes from, this is the place I hang out, to this is my home, which I have fun at and help others.

Finally, It is always funny to us in formation, that we could never imagine what would happen to us. Through it all, the hard times, the sick times. And the times you want to throw up your hands and start to sing the smerf song. But somehow God always gets us through each obstacle, and I dare say do come out better. Either way, community is very much like marriage. The only difference is your celibate and the kids usually go home after a while(Unless you’re at boarding school, it then takes a lot longer) But for us, we are very concerned with everyone’s salvation. Not just the youth we serve, but we are equally concerned with the salvation of our brothers. Because In the end it is not how many kids we minister to, but how strong our relationship with Christ is. Because you can be the most gifted youth minister, but without Christ you are ministering to no goal.

The Burning Society

Today in our society many of people are led by the society, instead of the society assisting the peoples. It has focused not on the people, and most certainly not on marriage, but instead it is focused on the societal norms. One quote from my favorite authors brings this to mind. “A dead thing can only go with the current, but a living thing can go against the current.” This quote is from G.K Chesterton, and helps me to remember what I must do, and who I must follow. Either-way the society will burn, it will either burn to the ground, or it will burn with love of God. So it is up to us to either help destroy our society, and in turn destroy ourselves, or help build the society in Christ, and in turn help build ourselves. This is our choice, what will you decide to choose?

In our life we can be very aware at how little time we have, or at the fact that we only have one life. However, not to scare anyone, but even Christ himself said “I will come like a thief in the night, for if the master knew what time the robber was coming, he would not let his house be broken into.” This amazing, for it is very true to as how little we know of our future. This is because we do not live in the future, we live in the present, and the only time we can know of the future, is if it becomes our present, or if God tells us it. So it makes sense that we wouldn’t want to waste any time, for we do not know when we will be needed to give an account our life. That will be the moment in which we cannot blame anyone, but that everything we have done, whether good or bad, all of it will be before our eyes. So in Christ we must lay all of our hope, and say to our self, do I simply want to go through the motions, and be known for nothing, or to have faith in God. Then by listening to him, and carrying out his will, we will then fulfill his promise and may yet attain salvation as saints.

" It is in the motion of love, that we discover not what we are, but who we are, and in who we are, we express our living God."

Truth Is

There is much conflict over what truth is, many people will try to take the relativist route, which states. “It is right for me, but not maybe for him.” This is illogical and self-contradictory. It is illogical because you jump from the concept of truth, which in itself must be universal, to an individual. By the very act of affirming that truth is relative, you therefore contradict yourself. Because you are moving from an individual statement, to an affirmative universal, I.E “That is correct” Moreover, by being a skeptic in who denies all absolutes you absolutely deny yourself. This then means that you contradict yourself and so acknowledge truth. So partially putting aside the philosophical words, I will change gears. Man is an empty vessel which is only capable of being filled by truth. We can only be filled by truth, nothing else satisfies, or is accepted. If there is no truth, all becomes ridiculous and not capable of being learned. So luckily for us, God is truth. All truth flows from him, in which pours into us. The only reason why we can be filled with false truths, are by the fact that we understand them to be truths, yet while they are merely a shadow of the real truth.

That was a taste of the philosophy we must learn. If it is complex that is fine, it can be difficult to understand. However, the truth resounds nevertheless. Essentially what I was saying is this, truth is. And no matter how we try to get around it, if we say that we “prove” there are no universal truths, a person doesn’t prove anything, but that truth is. So since God is truth, we must try to fill our hearts, souls, and mind with God. For else we will fail and be filled with the things of this world.

We all desire this, each and every person searches for their meaning, consciously or subconsciously. It is where our belief, our desire, and our entirety rest. It is in that meaning of life, that we find our “true self” However, the means to this end, is hotly disputed. Some say that riches alone will suffice, others say pleasure. I say goodness and happiness in the Lord is that, which everyone desires, it is the reason for awaking, the reason for eating, and the reason for your very existence. How can I prove this? Well, it is like falling in love, first you start being compelled to learn as much as you can, then while you are mesmerized you drop into an utter fascination. You cannot go without a second of thinking of your desire; soon they become your love. This love, I tell you, is your first and ultimate love, far beyond marriage or any simple vocation. We are first called to love God beyond all that is, how this is proven, but in our pursuit of love, and of fulfillment. The reason why there is discontent and unhappiness is not because people are broken, but that people search for their meaning in things that are mortal. All of this physical world we see will pass away, and yet we try to convince ourselves that we are currently immortal.

How I personally know that God has to be our meaning is not just faith, and yet that makes up a lot of the reason. But I can know this by logic and philosophy. We all know that we search for goodness, our feeling of acceptance or fulfillment. So then, is it not also apparent that when we keep searching, we remain living proof that we have not found our meaning? This then rests in one fact, that God alone must be our fulfillment. However, we tend to edge away from that idea, because it will demand of us, it will force us to give God something we are not good at giving. It will force us to give of ourselves; essentially, it will make us sacrifice our pride in our self to attain the goal. It is in fact the hardest thing we can do, because in it we will be most inconsistent. Regardless of how hard, what journey is complete without hardships and some horrors along the way? Even though we naturally love the stories about epic heroes who conquered all adversaries, and in the end attain their life’s goal. Those are the stories that bring a tear and an inspiration for our own journeys. So my challenge for you is this, follow Christ Jesus. Give until it hurts, for in that sacrifice and patient sorrow you will learn what true love means, and what the meaning of life is.
What many people may not understand is that God has a plan for you, in which none but you can fulfill in his grace. Not only has he counted every hair on your head, but he constantly knows of the number, and even more than that. God has always thought of you, even before the creation of time, God has always loved you, for if he did not, you would not, or could not exist. Because God has loved you for all eternity, his plan for you is tremendous, and it is also your way to salvation, however he will not force you to it. That is why there is sin and suffering in this world, not because God does not care, but that he cares greatly. He does not wish us to suffer, but because of sin, he has no choice. With every action we commit, there is another re-action, now whether or not that re-action is good or bad, that is to be determined by the initial action. And yes, if we fail, God still can gives us good acts in the end. But, with a bad action, there must be a consequence or a payment as it were. But luckily for us, we do not bear the full weight of our sins, for Christ Jesus has come down and destroyed sin once and for all. So in his merciful act, we not only can attain salvation through his grace, but through the Sacraments he instituted we are guided to heaven. For without the sacraments, it still would be impossible for us to attain salvation, and that is the reason why the sacraments were instituted. That then means we have many lifelong companions, these are: Jesus, Mary, all Saints, all Holy people, and God himself. Not to forget the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion, these are the two in which we can partake frequently. All others are meant to be singular, or very rare (Anointing of the Sick) therefore, as we are all on our God given Journeys, rejoice, for God is on your side, in which in total love, faith and works, in God, you cannot fail.

<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Sanctity can be a difficult thing to do or
even imagine doing. One might think of becoming a saint as a nice but virtually
impossible thing to do, especially in today’s society; whether you may think
this or not, I wish to tell you that becoming a Saint IS POSSIBLE!!! It is easier
than we realize, even though we are all confronted by many struggles and
obstacles that would make sanctity seem impossible. However, let us look at
these moments of struggles not as disaster and hardship but rather let us see
them as great opportunities that will help us get closer to God. Everything Our
Father puts in our way is a chance to help us grow and become the person we
were meant to be, not to hinder our life and burden it with negativity. An inspirational
quote by Don Bosco declares that <span style="color: #0070c0; font-family: "Cooper Black","serif";">“sanctity is easy, God does not scare us away. You do not have
to scourge yourself or fast or pray long hours. Just do your duty in school, at
home, at work. Take sufferings as they come- bad weather, disappointments,
physical illness, sorrow- they will make you saints”. <span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">God asks us to do what is already required of
us anywhere we go. As St. John Bosco states, we don’t have to be in constant
prayer like monks or starve ourselves. Although prayer and fasting are a must,
we do not have to carry them out to the extreme extents that some of us might
think we do. Most of all, you don’t have to be a priest, brother, sister or any
form of consecrated religious to become a saint; we are all capable of being
holy. However, the greatest gift that is required of us on our road to sanctity
is Love; a love for God, for your family and friends, and even for those whom
persecute you. Ask our Heavenly Father for this most necessary of graces. Storm
heaven with your prayers and they will be answered. Lastly, I would like to
include another quotation that I cannot put in better words than Saint John
Bosco himself: “<span style="color: #0070c0; font-family: "Cooper Black","serif";">Do not ever forget these three things: devotion to the Blessed
Sacrament, Devotion to Mary Help of Christians, and devotion to the Holy
Father!”. <span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Strive to be Saints! Our world
needs them! May God Bless You and your loved ones on your long, joyful, and yet
fruitful journey towards sanctity.

In this beautiful, yet difficult, journey we call life we all
encounter and experience many different things, such as our struggles. If we
had the choice, most of us would like to live a life free of suffering,
however, God calls us for something more. Due to how our society perceives pain
and suffering, it is easy to fall into the trap of looking at suffering as
something negative that should be avoided. Yet by looking at our suffering
through the eyes of Christ we are able to see that this is not true. We all go
through struggles, some of which change us entirely. However, we must never
forget that our suffering unites us to Christ our savior. We are all given the
special privilege of suffering as our savior did, and through it a close and
intimate dependence on Him can be formed, only if we allow it. Suffering helps
us become more humble, compassionate, and charitable among many other graces.
Whether you are going through a painful experience now or when you might go through
one in the future, know that you are never alone when you face them. Our Lord
Jesus Christ, our Lady Mary the refuge of sinners, and your guardian angel are
with you and it is important that you keep them always with you in your heart.
Jesus is with you, entrust your struggles to him because there is no doubt that
any struggle we may face is out of our hands. Also, by suffering we are able to
gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of Jesus’ love for us through the
pain he suffered in his crucifixion. We could find comfort in the sense that
Jesus knows our suffering; he was spat on, scourged, and nailed to a cross, all
of which was done because of the immeasurable love he has for every one of us.
I challenge you to accept your pain and suffering willingly and with a joy that
can only be found in Jesus Christ. Pray and get closer to Him through the
sacraments. May God bless you and continue to guide you through these moments.

“In the suffering Christ every sick person finds the meaning
of his or her afflictions… In Christ who died and rose again… humanity
discovers a new dimension to its suffering: instead of failure, it reveals
itself to be the occasion for offering witness to faith and love.”

But for those that hate school it can be greatly disappointing. Luckily for us, our wise founder Don Bosco solved this problem. He showed us that study is not to be endured, but to be rejoiced in. Because we tell the youth, "for you I study, for you I work, for you I am ready to give even my life." and we live those words daily. It does not leave our mind, that as we are working we are reminded for who we work. This not only helps us to continue working, but it also contributes to our spiritual life, and our reception of grace, primarily joy. It is in that work, that we are remained that our exhaustion means something, and that it is not simply being tired for nothing. What I have learned as a Salesian, is that in work offered to God, we not only attain salvation, but we also become tools of salvation for others. It is because of this that Salesians are meant to work. For we work for God, through his young people, so each and every day, I as a Salesian utter "Da Mihi Animas Ceatera Tolle"(Bring me souls, you take the Rest) not only with my words, but with my actions.
What I have always found beautiful was the very notion that the masterful Tolkien created. In his epic series he depicts the lowly and seemingly insignificant hobbit, which is the most peaceable and smallest of races. However, as the story continues one falls in love with the hobbit, not because he is some great hero. But because he is a small and weak creature, some would say a child-like figure. This figure we instantly attach ourselves to, because we too can feel and see our weakness, we think of why such a great life be given to us, me of all people? There are far greater and stronger people that could live the adventure of my life. Although we may not want to be that hobbit who goes through so much, the good, the bad, the thick and the thin. But despite that, all of us want to achieve the end; all of us want to feel that weight fall off of us. Like the scene in "The Lord of The Rings, the Return of the King" where the hobbits sit around a table, a job well done, a journey ended and the world saved. All of us want that feeling, even if we do not want to go through what they did. We want to know that despite the failures, that we did impact some people for the good. That we did make a difference, despite how truly small we are in comparison to the world. But we do not need stories to show us that, it has happened at least once. A little child, wrapped up in a manger, and born in Bethlehem, such a small and seemingly insignificant creature, lo behold that little child was the son of God! God incarnate! And that God-Man changed the entire world, whether or not people want to accept he was real or not, no other man changed and influenced so many people. As far as I know, Christianity is still the largest and most wildly celebrated religion. And yet, it all started from one child, God made flesh, born of a woman in a most unexpected time, in the most unexpected place. So if this Advent season, as we prepare for our lord and savior, remember that he planned for all of us to be his saints, so even if we are afraid, all we must do is cling to him as we leave our own shire behind.
All of these symptoms I affectionately call, post studying syndrome. It is a nasty beast that plagues all serious studiers. However, have you ever thought about the spiritual test? It is infinitely more important and life altering than any test that we can take on this earth, yet it tends to be the one that is most over looked.

How is this possible? Well maybe because it is the hardest to study for, or it is the hardest to understand. Either way, it is a trial and a test of our own human spirit. Because of this I have found symptoms related to our spiritual test anxieties. The first is CSD or as I like to say, (cold soul disorder) this is where we are neutrally cold, and so do not know where to begin to be holy. Another is MISS, (Misled in Spiritual Silence) this is where we have been given all access and knowledge to be holy, yet we are spiritually silent, dead to God and our spiritual self. This is generally because either we have misled ourself, or a thing foreign from us has misled us. The last is DHD which is (Dejected Holiness Disorder) this is where we have come so close, and traveled so far on our spiritual journey, that we give up due to weakness. This weakness is not simply due to our human fragility, but it is due to a self imposed idea that we are not good enough, and therefore God cannot wish us to be great, therefore we give up.

All of these disorders and ailments are huge spiritual catastrophes, in which a man or woman may find themselves in often. These spiritual disorders can either bring a soul to ruin, or continue the path of ruin. These are all called SAKS (Spiritual Ailments Kill Souls) luckily we have Christ who is the Godly mediator between God and man. Because of God's gift of his son, whom we celebrate soon, we are given sacraments. These Sacraments give us light, life and forgiveness. So do not linger in the coldness of the test of life, instead follow God with a burning love through his sacraments.
Short spoken word about carrying the cross.

God Bless and Live the Faith
The reason I remember loving it was because Tolkien(the author) was so capable of transporting you to another world, and nothing more excited my childish dreams then being in a strange new world. But as I got older I realized something, why do I need to be portaled into a new world, for the world I am in currently is full of wonders and the life I live is the greatest adventure of my life. I do not need to imagine up a story that will never be mine, for God has made and established me, this means that I have a story or journey that is unlike any other human being. I thought that this was truly profound, for if I have a unique story of my own, that then means, that there must be an equally unique story for every living person.

So because of this, I truly believe that Christ Jesus and his mother have guided me through all I have been through, and so that means that no fictional story can compare to mine, or to yours. So despite the tragedy and hardships we will face, if we cling to God and his sacraments then we may attain that heavenly goal. If we think about it, all the stories that captured our imagination and heart all had challanges and glories that the protagonist had to pass. So if we see our life in that new light, then how can we not cling to God wholly? How can we not bravely set foot on the road, even despite the uncertainity and hardships we will face? See, the race must be run, for the reward is too great for us to simply allow it to pass us, so pray, believe in God and live every day for him.
I remember as a child I would always ask God so many things, that I would not be surprised if I gave him a Godly sized head ache. However, now that I am taking philosophy classes, and taking things slower I realized several things. Not only is God always answering prayers, but he is always speaking to us, whether it is in word or in action God is always present to us. One of the things I truly find beautiful about God is the way he speaks, I for one used to believe that God spoke to us like a big booming voice, or like a bolt of lightening. And so because of that I would also be looking for him in the big things, and thinking that he would speak to me like he did to Moses on the mountain. However, this is not true, or atleast for most of us it is not true. God is not limited in the way he can speak to us, certainly he can be that big booming voice, but most of us do not have the faith to listen and accept that type of messege. Instead, what I have learned is that not only can God be found in the little things of daily life, but he also speaks to us in the most subtle of ways. His words to us could come to us like the light spring rain, or the soft falling of snowflakes. But the thing to bear in mind is that though it may seem subtle, snow piled up can create huge glaciers of ice. Or enough rain falling over a course of a time can lead to floods. So if we think that God is not talking to us, it simply is not the case, maybe we just are not waiting and listening for his answer.

"The More you have been giving the more is to be expected from you." In this I have been reminded of many things, not only of my responsibility of being a good Catholic. But it has shown me that as a Salesian Canidate I have a huge responsiblity to be a sign and bearer of light to all of those I minister to. Well some people may think, well I don't have that responsiblity so I can be lazy. No, this is just not true, we are the body of Christ and children of God. so solely because of that God has given us so much responsibility as his blessed children.

Because of this we must thank God for the glory he has given us, because if we stay with him in faith and in love, and obey his commandments then he will give us eternal life.

So thank God for his glorious plan for you, even if it may be different than you originally intend. Alleluia

Pope Benedict XVI. We are called to return to our faith and to grow in the faith God has already given us.
So because of this I want to show the beaty of our faith. Not only do we have a tradition which traces itself to Jesus Christ and back to Abraham himself. So not only does the Church have a huge wealth of knowledge and wisdom, but she is one of the promises made by Jesus.

With this I am going to make a challange for all of us this year. Let us all strive to not only be faithful to the teachings of the Church, but let us live our faith out like it is our last day to live, and let us love God like it will never end. That way with God's providence all of us can attain heaven.
